They brought us each a flower, and then we went to Dairy Queen. But Tegan and I have these horrifying pictures of ourselves in third grade, on our first date with these two boys whom asked us out. Because I think at some point, it can be very challenging not to get feelings for people when you're so close to them, so it’s not their fault. Though I cherish the relationships with my guy friends, I've had to create a unique set of boundaries with guys as I've gotten older. You can have an intimacy that can be very confusing. For me, I've always approached my relationships with men almost as if I was a man. But I definitely have always had very intimate relationships with men, and I think that's where those lines can be very blurry. ![]() I came out, and I've only partnered with women since that point. I had serious relationships when I was a teenager, but after I got out of high school, I never had a serious boyfriend again. SARA: I had my first boyfriend in the third grade. ![]() That's been a huge part of our twenties, and now early thirties: the transition from feeling like terrified, young girls having to prove ourselves.īefore you came out, did you have boyfriends? When you start out in the music business, you feel a little out of control, and you're working hard to get people's attention and focus. ![]() I don't feel as intimidated when I'm in the States, taking meetings with people, and sharing our thoughts. We've garnered up enough respect now because we've been around long enough. Before, when it came to people at the record label, or journalists - people that we relied on to help spread the message about our band - often I felt like we were kids trying to convince people to take us seriously. I see a lot of the people that we work with as peers. SARA: I think Tegan and I have always had a lot of confidence when it comes to the music business, but certainly now with our eighth record, and the industry especially down in the United States - I don't feel very afraid of it. As Tegan and Sara transformed into a full time job and the band began to go on bigger and more expansive tours, that type of lifestyle would become more difficult. What did you used to be afraid of that you’re not anymore? Tegan has always been the sister that’s more attracted to the idea of staying in one place, of putting down roots and letting them settle. It’s your heart inside her chest, it’s the warmth left over in your pockets. ![]() This theme becomes more crystallized on later records, most notably on The Con when she copes with distance by hopping on planes and writing letters, but here it’s all metaphysical. That song is sort of like a reminder to be caught up in the moment and a reminder that we are right next to each other and feel very different.Ī lot of Tegan’s songs are about distance and the struggle to feel connected with someone even when there’s a whole ocean between you. So I always feel like I’m on guard, and I’m always on edge. I’d like everything to last forever, but it doesn’t necessarily. Obviously not everyone feels that way, but certainly for me, I feel like nothing lasts forever. You’re always sort of on the edge of life when everything could end. I think that song was mainly just about the idea that we take for granted our relationships and we take for granted our lives. I always use it as sort of an inspiration when she leaves, even though we’re completely happy and fine and nothing in our lives is really all that dramatic. I’ve been in a relationship for nearly five years now and my partner travels a little bit.
